{"id":53,"date":"2009-06-08T17:06:36","date_gmt":"2009-06-09T00:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/joshua.frederici.net\/blog\/?p=53"},"modified":"2009-06-08T17:06:36","modified_gmt":"2009-06-09T00:06:36","slug":"vmware-storage-migration-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joshua.frederici.net\/blog\/vmware-storage-migration-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"VMware &#8211; Storage Migration (part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/joshua.frederici.net\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=33&amp;Itemid=9\">previous post<\/a>, I described a VMware Storage Migration task I was assigned and a quick run-down of the capability of the Storage VMotion feature.\u00a0 Now, I&#8217;ll go into more detail about an awesome little tool that could make the process much easier.<\/p>\n<p>The tool is called &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/vip-svmotion\/\">SVMotion<\/a>&#8216; and it is a plug-in to the Virtual Infrastructure client that you may already be using to administer your hosts and guest machines.\u00a0 Once installed, it adds the &#8216;Migrate Storage&#8217; option to\u00a0the right-click menu of your VM&#8217;s.\u00a0 When you select it, you will be presented with a window showing\u00a0a list of\u00a0datastores and the ones that the VM and its disks are on.<\/p>\n<p>From here, you can drag the VM and its disks from their source datastore to the destination datastore.\u00a0 Once you click ok, you&#8217;ll see a new &#8216;Relocate Virtual Machine Storage&#8217; task that will show the migrations progress.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a couple things I&#8217;ve learned from my use of this plug-in:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1.\u00a0 You have the move the actual virtual machine files as part of the migration whether you want to\u00a0or not.\u00a0 This is a Storage VMotion requirement.\u00a0 If you like where the virtual machine files reside, move them with the disk and then move them back after.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2.\u00a0 This\u00a0item appears to be a quirk of the plugin.\u00a0 Say you have a VM with multiple disks but only want to move the virtual machine files and the first disk.\u00a0 When you drag the VM to the destination datastore and click ok (having left the remaining disks in their original location), the plug-in attempts to move all VM files to the destination.\u00a0 If you have the space, it will begin; if you dont, it will immediately return an error.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, this plug-in is very nice and the price is right (free!).\u00a0 It&#8217;s certainly much more convenient to use the GUI to initiate the Storage VMotion whenever you can.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a previous post, I described a VMware Storage Migration task I was assigned and a quick run-down of the capability of the Storage VMotion feature.\u00a0 Now, I&#8217;ll go into more detail about an awesome little tool that could make the process much easier.
